Brief Encounter: February 12th, 2019

Proverbs 21:15 “When justice is done, it is a joy to the righteous but a terror to evildoers.”

Recently, I had the amazing privilege of sharing the Gospel with one of my classmates. I am in awe of how the Lord has answered my prayers to Him, and I am praising Him for His faithfulness. I have been praying recently for opportunities to share the Gospel specifically with people in my school. I do not know many Christians on my campus (and none who would openly evangelize), and so I find myself less bold. This is why I am so thankful– I can see evidence of the Lord working in my heart! The Holy Spirit has convicted me and caused me to act and obey God’s commands. Amen.

Unfortunately, this encounter was very brief because we only had a few minutes before class started. This student and I regularly get to class early and have had some conversations about schoolwork, commuting, etc., but never anything deeper than surface level. This student is also transgender, which is something they have mentioned a few times. We never got around to talking about this and what the Bible says about it, but I pray that we will one day be able to.

As I got to this particular class (Historical Methods & Historiography, for those who are curious), I decided to open my Bible and try to read some of 2 Chronicles. As this person walked in, they immediately asked me if I was reading a Bible. When I replied “yeah,” my classmate told me that they were trying to get more ‘into’ religious things. I asked what they meant by that, and they said that they have been thinking a lot about God recently because they were in a bad car accident but escaped unharmed.

I asked if they thought they would go to heaven when they died, and they replied that they weren’t sure if there was a heaven or hell. When I asked why, I was met with the question “Why would a good God send people to hell?”

This was an exciting moment for me, because I got to talk about how God IS good, and if God is all good, then He MUST be just (Deut 32:4). I used the courtroom analogy and asked this person if a good judge would let a crime go without a consequence. They said no, and then we talked about how everyone sins, but that does not negate the argument (Romans 3:10). My classmate seemed pretty receptive to this. We did not have very much time, and so I immediately brought in the good news. I told them that sin warrants an eternity in hell BECAUSE God is good and just, but that He sent His son to die for us. Jesus was fully God, which was how He was able to accomplish living a sinless life and being our Savior, and He was fully man, which enabled Him to do so. I told my classmate that if they repented and believed they would be saved (Mark 1:15).

They seemed pretty agreeable to this idea, and was very interested in the idea of repentance. However, they talked less about belief in Jesus Christ. They also asked me about occult practices, and I told them that those practices were expressly forbidden in the Bible. Since I didn’t really get to go through the Law with this person, I gave them a ARE YOU GOOD ENOUGH TO GET INTO HEAVEN tract to read over.

Please pray for this person and that the Lord would save them. They are clearly seeking for a deeper meaning to life, and I pray that they come to know that Jesus is the bread of life, the living water, the way and the truth (John 6,7,14). Pray for me also and that the Lord would continue to work in me. Pray that He would break my heart for sin and that I would love the lost more than I fear their opinions.
