Evangelism at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront during Something in the Water, April 27th, 2019

Romans 1:18-19 “for the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.”

Hello everyone! My apologies in getting this post up so late– I have been very busy the last two weeks. It seems like I write this with every post I make! To keep the reasons for my absence short, Zach and I have found a home for when we get married, joined a church, I have transitioned from part time to full time at work, and finished my third year of college! Praise the Lord for all of these new (and sometimes challenging) things!! Since I am getting married in July, I am not sure how many blog posts I will be able to post during the next couple of months, but I have planned for guest posters to come and write.

The Lord blessed us this weekend that we went out with many people. We went out during the middle of the first annual Something in the Water Festival, and so there was a great deal of people. In the past, I have gone down during this particular weekend because of College Beach Weekend. However, this seems to have eclipsed it entirely!

Sean, his daughter Addy, Galal, William, Reuben, Zach, and I went out this weekend. Along with tracts, we passed out cold water bottles to the people who walked past us.

Zach and Sean got to have several conversations with larger groups of people. The first group of people were about five women who I had previously passed out tracts to. I gave them all Million Dollar Bills about half a street up from where Zach and Sean were stationed. Sean just happened to overhear one woman ask “What IS the million dollar question?” and invited them over to talk. He and Zach were able to share the gospel with them!

The other group of people were a group of around 6 or 7 men who professed to be Christians. Although they professed to be Christians, it seemed that they held a low view of sin because everyone does commit transgressions against God. They said things along the lines of “Just because people sin doesn’t mean that they are bad.” This is a pretty common objection that we receive when evangelizing. However, it is important to let people know that God’s wrath is not lessened just because every person in history, aside from One, has sinned. An analogy Sean used was especially helpful in getting this across. He told the analogy of someone in a court room. If a judge asked an offender why they stole precious diamonds, the excuse of “many other people have stolen precious stones” will not hold. The offender would still be punished, and so it is the same with us in this sense. Although this analogy was used, their minds were not changed in the moment. I do not know where these men truly stand with God, but please join me in praying for their salvation and that the Lord truly has saved them. Only He knows!

Galal got to have many conversations with people in groups of twos or threes. I know that he was able to share the gospel with all of them except one woman. She reacted poorly to being told that she was not a ‘good’ person, and left her friends. I have one experience like that, and I know it can be very nerve wracking. However, it is the perfect picture of Romans 1:18-25. It is sad, but I am not surprised. We cannot expect unbelievers to act and react the same as believers. We should be praying for this woman. In addition to this conversation, the other outstanding moment that I noticed will actually be posted later. I had the amazing opportunity to record Galal sharing the gospel at Sean’s request (and with the person’s permission). I am hoping to have this video on my blog soon, and I am hoping that you would take the time to watch it! It was a joy to be present for such a clear presentation of the gospel.

Unfortunately, I did not get to share the gospel with anyone outside of giving away tracts. I was watching Addy for a lot of the time and it was my absolute joy to be able to care for her and serve my brothers in this way. Together, in between other shenanigans, we gave away tracts to the people who were walking past us. Addy is a toddler and so she wasn’t really aware of WHAT she was passing out, but she did it with such an enthusiasm! I hope that, Lord willing, when she becomes a Christian the Lord will cultivate in her this same excitement for sharing the gospel.

When I didn’t have Addy, I passed out tracts by myself and invited people to talk if they had a moment. Unfortunately, nobody did. In the past, it was very easy to become discouraged when these types of things happened. I would, in all honesty, feel like I was not obeying the Great Commission when people would not be responsive to me. This type of thinking is very wrong and dangerous– it can lead to pragmatism! I know that if I share the gospel I am obeying the Lord and His command for all Christians. The reactions, or lack thereof, that I receive are God’s will being enacted in that moment. There is nothing that I can do to convince someone of the gospel, and this is so comforting to remember. I am thankful that I was able to keep this in mind during my time out on the Oceanfront.

Praise the Lord for the conversations we were able to have and the tracts we were able to pass out! I think in the end we passed out over 150. Please pray for the hearts of those that received the tracts and who heard the gospel on this day. Pray that the Lord would save them and place them in biblical churches. In addition, please pray for all of us who go out and share the gospel, and that we remember biblical truths and constantly long to know Him better. On a more personal note, please pray that I will have opportunities to share the gospel with those around me. Please pray that my fear of God increases, that my love of others increases, and that God puts a sense of urgency in my heart.
